Over-the-counter products to effectively manage many cases of mild acne, but prescription drugs may be necessary in severe cases. In this issue I will summarize the various topical agents that are available to manage acne.
In the choice of treatment for different types of Acne should be taken into account the effect of the individual provider.
Dermatologists generally employ these agents in various combinations and in conjunction with oral antibiotics if necessary.
BENZOYL PEROXIDE
Potent antibacterial agents, benzoyl peroxide preparations for the improvement of both inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions. They dry and peel the skin, and they help to clear blocked follicles. Benzoyl peroxide can be used alone to treat mild acne, but in severe cases should be used in conjunction with topical retinoid. Benzoyl peroxide is an ingredient in many brand name over-the-counter products, such Vilantae Clearasil and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and less expensive generic products.
These products include both water and alcohol in vehicles, some soap, medicated pads and washes. The Soaps and washes may not be as effective as lotions, creams or gels that are not washed from the skin as easily.
Benefits of benzoyl peroxide based Products:
– Available over the counter.
– No reported bacterial resistance.
– Available in many formulations, including cream and liquid. (Water-gels are less irritating than alcohol preparations.)
Disadvantages of benzoyl peroxide based products:
– Sometimes irritating (causes stinging, redness)
– Contact sensitivity can occasionally occur.
– May bleach clothing and linens.
Hydroxyacids WITH GLYCOLIC ACID
Also known grown as fruit acids – hydroxy acids (AHA), glycolic acid, which contain very popular. Although not comedolytic it can help some patients with mild acne, especially when used in combination with topical retinoids. AHAs dissolve the bond of dead skin cells and thus to accelerate exfoliation. They also appear on smooth and repair photo aged skin. Over-the-counter products contain low concentrations of AHA. Peels and products is used, and dispensed by doctors for treatment of wrinkles and pigmentation problems are stronger and more effective peeling agent.
Retinols
Although retinols were originally marketed to aging Fight skin, they are being touted for use in the treatment of acne. Their efficacy in acne has not been scientifically tested.
MULTI-INGREDIENT Over-The-Counter Products
There are numerous products that contain various combinations of resorcinol, aloe, glycolic acid, sulfur and salicylic acid. There are also plant Remedies with aloe and benzoyl peroxide, some of which contain concreting as color. Such products can be very difficult to evaluate clinically.
